Dhaka daily resumes publication after court order

DHAKA - Bengali newspaper Amar Desh came out with a four-page edition Friday, a day after a high court bench stayed its closure by the government and warned the authorities against harassing the daily’s acting editor.

The printer’s line continued to mention publisher Hashmat Ali and acting editor Mahmudur Rahman, both of whom were prosecuted by the government on criminal charges, including sedition.

Rahman was a minister in the Khaleda Zia government and the newspaper favours the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), bdnew2s24.com said.

The government sealed its press and suspended its publication June 1.

Amar Desh was closed on the ground that there is no publisher for the daily, The Daily Star said.

Media organisations at home and international bodies had decried the government’s action as a threat to the freedom of press and expression.
