Bangladesh apex court to have first woman judge

DHAKA - Bangladesh is set to have its first woman judge at the Supreme Court.

Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana is among four senior High Court judges elevated by President Zillur Rahman to the appellate division of the apex court.

Sultana was also the first woman to be made a high court judge in 2000, The Daily Star said Wednesday.

Women have played a prominent role in Bangladesh’s social and cultural life.

Bangladesh’s prime minister is a woman, Sheikh Hasina, while the leader of the opposition too is a woman, Khaleda Zia.
