Myanmar parliament agrees to set up union supreme court

YANGON - Myanmar’s parliament Wednesday agreed to form a new union supreme court with seven members, the state run radio and television reported.
Of the seven supreme court judges, U Tun Tun Oo was nominated by president-elect U Thein Sein as the chief justice and the nomination is to be discussed in Thursday’s parliament session, Xinhua quoted the report as stating.
Myanmar started its first three-chamber parliament sessions simultaneously Jan 31 with the house of representatives (lower house) and the house of nationalities (upper house) going into sitting in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar’s new capital city.
While the sessions of regional or state parliaments also began separately in 14 respective states on the same day.
The first sessions in two decades of the three-level parliaments were summoned by the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) over three months after the multi-party general elections Nov 7, 2010.
