NEW DELHI - The Supreme Court Thursday asked the central government to tell it where was the country’s top tax evader Hasan Ali, who has stashed away a huge amount of money in foreign banks.

The apex court bench of Justice B. Sudershan Reddy and Justice S.S. Nijjar told Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium to give it Ali’s status.

The matter was adjourned after the solicitor general told the court that Ali was very much in India and the government has taken all the steps to ensure that he does not leave the country.

The court query came in the wake of the hearing of eminent jurist Ram Jethmalani’s petition for directions to the government to take steps to bring back black money stashed away in foreign banks.

The matter will come up for hearing March 3.
