Mich. congresswoman called to Detroit grand jury
DETROIT — The office of a congresswoman who is the mother of Detroit ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says she’s not a target of a federal investigation and will cooperate with a grand jury that’s summoned her to testify in Michigan.
A Thursday statement from U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick’s office says the Democratic congresswoman’s attorney has assured her she’s not a target of the grand jury in Detroit.
Notice of the subpoena was in Wednesday’s Congressional Record. An appearance date wasn’t disclosed.
Federal authorities are investigating corruption in city government while Kwame Kilpatrick was mayor. He hasn’t been charged. He resigned in 2008 after pleading guilty to obstructing justice in a case that revealed his affair with his chief of staff.
His spokesman says he has no comment on the subpoena.
