Wis. releases grenade video to settle AP lawsuit

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin prison officials have released a video to The Associated Press that shows a guard tossing a non-lethal grenade into an inmate’s cell and running away as it detonated.

The Department of Corrections released the video after the AP sued seeking a copy under the state’s open records law. The department also agreed to pay $5,000 in attorneys fees to the AP’s lawyer in the case. It did not admit wrongdoing.

The AP requested the video after the state paid $49,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the inmate, Raynard Jackson. He alleged the detonation of the stinger grenade in his cell amounted to excessive force.

Jackson’s case marks the only time a stinger grenade has been used inside a Wisconsin inmate’s cell.
