Delhi Zoo a death trap, court told

NEW DELHI - The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought a reply from the central government on a public interest litigation by a law student who said that the National Zoological Park (Delhi zoo) had become a “death trap” for animals and should be shifted to the city’s outskirts.
A division bench of chief justice Deepak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked the central government to file its reply by May 11.
“On May 11, we will finally decide the matter and pronounce the judgment,” said the bench.
The Delhi zoo has become a death trap for the animals for the last several years and animals like the elephants and Bengal tigers are suffering from diseases, the petition filed by Hargyan Singh Gahlot said.
The Indian porcupines there have not given birth for the last many years, and the animals are dying without breeding, it said.
The nearby railway track and high pollution level also make the site unsuitable for animals, the petition added.
