MUMBAI - Social activist Medha Patkar and several others were detained Tuesday evening for forcefully entering the premises of the scam-hit Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society in south Mumbai, police said. They were later released.

Patkar and other activists had forcefully entered Adarsh Society premises to protest the ongoing activities in connection with the society, a police officer said.

They were released later, he added.

Patkar and several residents of the nearby slums alleged that water connections to the surrounding localities were disrupted because of the “illegal tower”.

The activists demanded that the water connection be restored in the nearby regions and action be taken against builders who have illegally encroached upon their land to build swanky new buildings. The activists also shouted slogans that the entire Adarsh Society was illegal.
