NEW DELHI - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday issued notices to the Delhi government and police on the death of a labourer while he was cleaning a sewer without the necessary safety kit.

Taking cognizance on its own of a media report, the rights panel has asked for reports from Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta and Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal within four weeks.

Mahesh Kumar was asked to clean the sewer by L.R.S. Institute of Tuberculosis and Related Diseases in Mehrauli Oct 19. He lost consciousness after sniffing poisonous gases and was taken to a hospital where he died the next day.

Quoting the media report, the NHRC said that Mahesh was not using any safety gear at the time he was cleaning the sewer.

“The commission in its proceedings observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise serious issue of human rights violation,” an NHRC statement read.
