Trial for Cuban militant set for Jan. 11

EL PASO, Texas — The trial of anti-Castro Cuban militant Luis Posada Carriles has been set to begin in January.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone has scheduled the trial in El Paso for Jan. 11. The former CIA operative faces federal charges of perjury, obstruction and naturalization fraud.

Posada has been linked to a 1976 bombing that killed 73 people aboard a passenger jet, but he’ll go on trial for charges related to statements made as part of his immigration proceedings.

Posada’s trial had previously been scheduled for this past March but was postponed. The judge said Wednesday that she wants no further delays.
