GANDHINAGAR - The Gujarat High Court Friday permitted businessman Rajesh Adani to travel across the country after granting amendment in his conditional bail application.

However, Justice H.B. Antani imposed a condition that he would have to appear before the CBI here on the first day of every month until further orders. The court also said he would have to take the CBI’s prior permission if he wants to travel abroad.

The court granted this amendment in conditional bail after Rajesh Adani’s counsel P.M. Thakkar submitted that he was a leading businessman and was required to travel across the country frequently.

Thakkar said the Adani Group managing director would abide by all court directions for this permission.

Recently Rajesh Adani was granted four days’ relaxation in his conditional bail to appear before the Goa CBI for his deposition. He was arrested Feb 27 by the Goa unit of the CBI for his alleged involvement in tax and duty evasion.

The CBI has alleged that Rajesh Adani had evaded about Rs.80 lakh in custom duty and other taxes.

Adani’s brother Vasant Adani had filed a habeas corpus in the high court and Rajesh was released on bail by Justice R.M. Doshit at a hearing at her residence under “urgent” charge.

After Adani’s release, advocate Girish Das filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the high court alleging that Justice R.M. Doshit, being a single judge, had heard a habeas corpus matter at her residence which should have been heard by a division bench.
