CHANDIGARH - Migrant labour leader Ram Charan Yadav Monday took over as chairman of the newly established Punjab Migrants Welfare Board.

“Punjab is the first state in the country which constituted the board for the welfare of migrant labourers coming here from other states. The board would look after the rights and interests of migrant labours,” Akali Dal legislator Bikram Singh Majithia said.

A significant migrant labour population lives in Punjab’s industrial hub Ludhiana and in the state capital Chandigarh. They are also significantly contributing in the agriculture, industry and other sectors of economy of Punjab.

Yadav said that he would take full care of the rights of migrant labour coming here and already living in Punjab. “We would coordinate the endeavour of the government in giving a new push to the economy of Punjab by involving migrants in the mainstream.”
