CHANDIGARH - A court here Thursday handed down a 10-year jail term to a man for raping a 22-month-old girl last March.

Joginder, 20, a scooter mechanic, was convicted in five hearings and within 10 months of committing the crime.

Additional district and sessions judge Raj Rahul Garg also slapped a fine of Rs.20,000 on Joginder and directed him to pay a compensation of Rs.50,000 to the family of the victim. The court announced its verdict on the basis of circumstantial evidence.

According to police, Joginder had taken the girl, his neighbour in Chandigarh suburb Mauli Jagran, on the pretext of playing and dropped her back after one hour. The mother of the victim saw the child crying and bleeding profusely.

Rape was confirmed in a medical examination.

“I am happy that we have finally got justice but the punishment should be more rigorous. I want him to remain behind bars for the remaining years of his life,” said the victim’s father, a labourer.
