Polanski hearing in sex case ends without ruling

LOS ANGELES — A hearing that could decide the fate of Roman Polanski’s long-delayed sex case has ended without a ruling by a California appeals court.

The three justices listened to more than an hour of arguments Thursday from attorneys for Polanski, his victim and prosecutors. The judges peppered each attorney with questions challenging their arguments.

Polanski’s attorneys asked that the criminal case against the “Chinatown” director be dismissed.

The appeals court in Los Angeles is being asked to decide if it should order a Superior Court judge to consider dismissing the case without Polanski’s attendance in court.

Prosecutors argue the case should proceed since Polanski was arrested in September in Switzerland.

The justices are expected to eventually issue a written ruling.
