CHANDIGARH - A local court here Monday sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment a Chandigarh police sub-inspector, convicted of beating to death a youth in custody.

Additional district and sessions judge Raj Rahul Garg also imposed a fine of Rs.20,000 on sub-inspector Narinder Singh.

Anil Kumar, resident of Manimajra town here, was picked up by police for interrogation in July 2007 on suspicion. Police said that Anil Kumar had jumped from the second floor of the police station. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

“Police were concocting false stories to misguide us and they also tampered with the official records. Initially they said that Anil had met with a road accident and after that, they said that he jumped from the building,” said Ved Parkash, uncle of Anil Kumar.
