DeLay does legal limbo in money laundering case

AUSTIN, Texas — Republican Tom DeLay danced the cha-cha on TV, but he’s tiptoeing through the criminal courts in Texas.

The former U.S. House majority leader who’s competing on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” was indicted four years ago on charges of money laundering and conspiracy. The accusations are connected to 2002 state legislative elections.

Now, his case hinges on how an appeals court rules on legal questions raised by two indicted DeLay associates. DeLay has pleaded not guilty and it’s possible the case may never go to trial.

DeLay’s attorney, Dick DeGuerin (Dih-GEHR’-in), says the wait has frustrated his client.

Prosecutors say they don’t think the show, which has its third round on Monday, will affect the case.
