sheila_dikshitNEW DELHI - There is no place for crimes against women in civilized society, said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Thursday while advocating strict punishment for those involved in heinous crimes like rape and sexual assault.

There is no place for crimes against women in civilized society. Man can do much more. It is surprising why they are indulging in heinous crimes like rape and sexual assault. The persons involved in such heinous crimes should be given harsh punishment, Dikshit stated, while inaugurating a self defence workshop for girls here.

The workshop for higher secondary school girls was organized by the Safe Women Foundation.

The chief minister described rape, molestation and sexual assault as a stigma on civilized society.

Crimes against women these days are increasing day by day. People who commit such crimes feel that women are weak and can be easily suppressed. But there are some simple ways that, if used, can be of great help to women. They should come forward and opt for self defence training programmes, Dikshit said.

She also stressed on the need for preventing such incidents than providing a cure after the crime has taken place.

The chief minister said that eve teasing incidents were taking place across the country, but the eve teasing cases in the capital are being “exaggerated, highlighted, reported and presented with an intention to malign the authorities in Delhi”.

“Hence a wrong picture is being painted in respect to Delhi,” she added.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely was also present on the occasion.
