WASHINGTON - Jailed Chinese dissident and writer Liu Xiaobo, who was awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize, sacrificed his freedom for his beliefs, US President Barack Obama said Friday.

TAIWAN - Taiwan Friday risked irking China by hailing jailed Chinese dissident and writer Liu Xiaobo for his efforts to fight for human rights that earned him a Nobel Peace Prize.

BEIJING - International rights groups hailed Friday's first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Peace prize as a "worthy winner" and urged Western governments to use the award to keep up pressure on China to release him from prison.

BEIJING - Police in the Chinese capital detained at least 20 human rights activists who were celebrating Friday's award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the jailed dissident writer Liu Xiaobo, one of the activists said.

DHARAMSALA - Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama Friday urged the Chinese leadership to release jailed dissident leader and writer Liu Xiaobo, who has been named for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, and "other prisoners of conscience".
