Judge: Conrad Black can’t return to Canadian home

CHICAGO — Former media mogul Conrad Black won’t be allowed to return to his home in Canada for the time being.

U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve on Friday ordered Black to surrender his expired passport. She also says Black can’t obtain a new passport without the court’s permission.

Black was freed from prison in Florida on bail Wednesday after serving two years of a 6 1/2-year sentence for defrauding Hollinger International investors out of $6.1 million.

Black’s attorneys say he wants to return to Toronto because of media attention and because his wife has medical conditions that make their Florida home unsuitable.

The judge wants more thorough financial information from Black before she decides whether to allow him to return to Canada. She ordered him back in court Aug. 16.
