O’Connor, in NY, gives schools poor civics marks
NEW YORK — Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor says an “unintended consequence” of the No Child Left Behind initiative is that kids are learning less about civics.
O’Connor said Wednesday in New York that the federal initiative appropriated funds “based on good test scores in math, science and reading.” But she says it did not distribute money for history or civics.
She made her comments at a conference to promote a website that will teach kids about how government works.
She heralded online games as a free, teacher-friendly and effective way to teach civics in middle schools.
