Maine advocate admits harboring illegal aliens
BANGOR, Maine — A man who spoke out on behalf of migrant workers and immigrants for the last 30 years in Maine has acknowledged harboring illegal aliens.
South Portland resident Benjamin J. Guiliani Sr. pleaded guilty Tuesday to five federal charges in U.S. District Court in Bangor.
The 62-year-old Mexican-American was indicted in January on charges including harboring and transporting illegal aliens and failing to file a corporate tax return. The Bangor Daily News newspaper says the plea agreement lays out stipulations for paying back taxes.
Guiliani is a Texas native who earned a reputation in the 1990s as a leading voice for the ethical treatment of immigrants as head of the Maine Migrant Workers Advocacy Group.
