Partial Iraq election tallies sent for approval
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s election commission says it is sending to the Supreme Court for ratification the results of the March vote, except those for Baghdad province.
The move comes amid increasing impatience over the delay in announcing the final results more than two months after the parliamentary election was held.
The votes from Baghdad province are currently being recounted following allegations of fraud by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, whose coalition narrowly lost first place to a bloc led by a secular Shiite and heavily backed by minority Sunni Arabs.
Also on hold are results for special party compensatory seats, Christian seats and those whose winners are being vetted for links to Saddam Hussein’s regime by a Shiite-led panel.
