Customs agency head says immigration accord tough

SAN DIEGO — The head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection says Americans agree on a need to overhaul immigration laws but lack consensus on what should be done.

Alan Bersin said Thursday in San Diego that it will require “an act of political leadership” to find common ground.

The CBP commissioner says everyone in a room would agree the immigration system is broken but each one would have a different answer on what to do about it.

Bersin says any immigration overhaul should be based on principles of secure borders, the secure movement of workers back and forth across borders and a path to citizenship for people living in the U.S. illegally.
