NEW DELHI - A city court is likely to award sentence Thursday to six Jammu and Kashmir residents, including a woman, convicted for the 1996 Lajpat Nagar bomb blast that claimed 13 lives.

Last week, the prosecution sought death penalty for the convicts while the defence pleaded for leniency and a sentence of life imprisonment for four convicts held guilty for murder.

The case is being heard in the court of district and sessions judge S.P. Garg.

The defence sought life imprisonment on the ground that they had already spent 14 years in jail during the trial.

The four facing death penalty are Mirza Nissar Hussain alias Naza, Mohammad Naushad, Mohammad Ali Bhatt alias Killey and Javed Ahmed Khan.

Two others convicts, Farooq Ahmed Khan and Farida Dar, face a maximum punishment of seven years.

The blast took place May 2, 1996 evening in the busy Central Market area of Lajpat Nagar killing 13 people and injuring 39 others.
