First witness to testify in Karadzic trial

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The first witness is scheduled to testify in Radovan Karadzic’s genocide trial about the horrors of Serb-run detention camps set up during the Bosnian War.

The first day of testimony against the former Bosnian Serb leader comes months after his trial started last October with the prosecutor’s opening statement.

Tuesday’s first witness is Ahmet Zulic, a Muslim survivor of the notorious Manjaca camp who is expected to describe how Bosnian Serbs “ethnically cleansed” his home town and herded Muslims into the camp.

Karadzic faces 11 charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes for allegedly orchestrating atrocities perpetrated by Bosnian Serb troops and paramilitary thugs throughout the 1992-95 war. He insists he is innocent.
