Judge hears testimony in Vegas ax attack case

LAS VEGAS — A 28-year-old woman said through tears and a translator that a Las Vegas man laughed as she pleaded for him to stop striking her and her 4-month-old son with a medieval-style battle ax on a residential street.

Sonia Lisset Castro on Monday peeled back a gauzy white scarf to show a judge the scars where surgeons reattached her face and jaw. She says her right eye is irreparably damaged.

The boy was killed.

Harold E. Montague sat in shackles, staring at the defense table in front of him during his preliminary hearing.

Castro pointed at Montague when asked who was responsible for the attack. The 33-year-old Montague has told police he doesn’t remember the attack.

Testimony isn’t expected to conclude in time for Justice of the Peace Melanie Andress-Tobiasson to decide Monday whether to bind Montague over for trial in state court.
