CHENNAI - Lawyers in Chennai on Monday abstained from courts and tribunals to protest the National Commission for Higher Education and Research Bill, and the Foreign Education Providers Bill.

The lawyers believe that if the Bill is passed, it would jeopardise their profession and the Bar Council along with the respective State Governments would be usurped of their powers.

Madras (Chennai) High Court Advocates Association President R C Paul Kanagaraj criticized the Central Government for permitting foreign law firms to establish themselves in the country, saying that such institutions could crush the country’s own interests.

“We suspect that by introducing the higher education bill, the powers of bar council members, the act is taking away the powers. That is one apprehension. The second one is introducing foreign education providers bill thereby indirectly bringing the foreign institution in India and promoting them as Indian lawyers,” said Kanagaraj.

“That is also not correct, which will affect the legal fraternity. By introducing foreign education bill, what kind of foreign laws they are going to bring and what they are going to do and we are not clear in that,” he added.

The lawyers further said the proposed arrangement would only benefit the rich in the matter of getting education. (ANI)
