Manipur gets its first gay married couple

IMPHAL - In the first same-sex marriage in Manipur, a 25-year-old ‘groom’ married his companion of six years, a 28-year-old man, at a private function here Thursday.

The two exchanged bouquets to solemnise the wedding in the presence of a modest gathering at a community hall in the heart of the city.

Sandip, the ‘groom’, and Nikhil, the ‘bride’ were in a relationship for the past six years and decided to wed.

The parents of the couple were opposed to the marriage. The wedding was attended by a number of homosexuals, well-wishers and friends.

Sandip said: “I am blessed to have Nikhil as my wife. We are indeed happy.”

Nikhil is a beautician and runs a parlour, while Sandip supports her financially. Sandip was wearing a black suit for the ceremony, while Nikhil was wearing a white gown.
