LUCKNOW - A three-day strike by Uttar Pradesh government employees and teachers has been called off following a late night settlement between the agitating workers and the government.
The employees had been agitating for parity in allowances with their counterparts under the central government. The agitation was intensified after Lucknow District Magistrate A.K. Ghosh slapped an employee Friday.
Said R.A. Dube, who heads the 18 lakh-strong Uttar Pradesh Employees and Teachers Joint Action Committee: “We decided to call off our agitation in view of the assurance given to us by a top official of the government on our demand.”
The settlement was arrived at after a prolonged meeting between Uttar Pradesh additional cabinet secretary Vijay Shankar Pandey and employees’ representatives here late Saturday night.
“We have not only assured them of considering their demands sympathetically but have also decided to release all arrested employees as also to withdraw the suspension of others with immediate effect,” Pandey told reporters.
