UK officials: China sets date to execute Briton

LONDON — Officials in Britain say Chinese authorities plan to execute a British man convicted of drug smuggling before the end of the year.

Britain’s Foreign Office says Chinese authorities have informed them they will execute Akmal Shaikh on Dec. 29.

The Foreign Office said in a statement Monday that it was “alarmed and deeply concerned” at the news.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had personally lobbied Chinese leaders to spare Shaikh’s life.

Human rights group Reprieve says Shaikh could be mentally ill.
