Man convicted of murder during 2006 Indy robbery

INDIANAPOLIS — A man has been convicted of murder for his role in a 2006 Indianapolis robbery during which three children and four adults were shot.

Prosecutors had no physical evidence in the case against 33-year-old James Stewart. Some witnesses said Stewart told them he was involved in the crime. Others testified that they were with Stewart elsewhere around the time of the killings.

The jury reached its verdict late Friday after beginning deliberations around noon.

Authorities believe Stewart’s handgun fired just one of the shots that hit the victims. But he can be held liable for all the murders under Indiana law.

Desmond Turner was convicted of being the main triggerman and was sentenced last month to life in prison without parole.

Stewart’s sentencing is set for Jan. 6.
