Probation for driver who killed man with Maserati

GREENVILLE, S.C. — A South Carolina man has been sentenced to three years probation for plowing his speeding Maserati into a house, killing a man inside.

John Ludwig pleaded guilty Monday to reckless homicide in the death of Frederic Bardsley. The 37-year-old businessman was also ordered to perform 500 hours of community service.

Ludwig suffered minor injuries when his sports car smashed into the back of Bardsley’s home. A murder charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.

Prosecutors had asked for the maximum sentence of 10 years, saying Ludwig was racing a friend and going at least 85 mph.

Defense attorneys asked the judge to consider Ludwig’s many charity endeavors. They also said Ludwig has since been forced to sell his company and now sees his children for only minutes a week.
