Wife of cleric in CIA kidnap trial seeks millions
MILAN — The wife of an Egyptian cleric allegedly kidnapped from a Milan street in 2003 as part of the CIA’s extraordinary rendition program is seeking millions of euros (dollars) in damages.
Lawyers for Ghali Nabila told a Milan court Wednesday she deserved €5 million ($7.4 million) for her suffering after not knowing for years what had become of Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr.
Twenty-six Americans, most of them CIA agents, are on trial in absentia, accused of kidnapping Nasr as part of the CIA program. Nasr, known as Abu Omar, was allegedly flown to Egypt where he says he was tortured.
Human rights advocates say renditions were the CIA’s way to outsource the torture of suspected terrorists to countries where it was practiced. The CIA hasn’t commented.
