Anna Nicole Smith case: More charges may be filed

LOS ANGELES — Defense lawyers in the drug case surrounding the death of Anna Nicole Smith have been notified that prosecutors will file an amended complaint at a discovery hearing.

The document set to be disclosed at a Wednesday morning hearing increases the number of charges against Smith’s lawyer boyfriend Howard K. Stern who is billed as an aider and abettor of two doctors charged with prescribing for Smith the drugs that killed her. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for Oct. 5 but the date could change as the result of Wednesday’s status conference among attorneys for Stern, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Dr. Khristine Eroshevich.

Smith died of a drug overdose on Feb.8, 2007, in a Florida hotel room. The three defendants have pleaded not guilty to illegally prescribing controlled substances.
