LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Testimony is scheduled to pick up in the Louisville trial of a former high school football coach over the death of a player.

Former Pleasure Ridge Park High School coach David Jason Stinson is charged with reckless homicide and wanton endangerment in connection with the death of Max Gilpin, who collapsed after practice in August 2008 and died three days later. Stinson has pleaded not guilty.

Jurors on Tuesday heard testimony from Gilpin’s father and two former teammates, who told jurors that players ran for an unusually long time the day Gilpin collapsed.

Prosecutors said Stinson ran a brutal practice the day Gilpin collapsed. Stinson’s defense said the practice wasn’t unusually hard.

Stinson’s trial is a rare case of a coach being prosecuted for a player’s heat-related death.
