High court to be urged to defer Ayodhya verdict

LUCKNOW - As the Allahabad High Court is to deliver its verdict on Ayodhya’s Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute Sep 24, two advocates propose to seek deferment of the judgement.

“In view of the prevailing situation across the country, we are seeking postponement of the verdict scheduled to be pronounced Sep 24,” advocate Neeraj Kumar Srivastava told reporters here.

Srivastava and Jaspreet Singh Singh, also an advocate, have prepared separate applications in this regard, expressing fears that the fallout of the judgement could vitiate the communal environment across the country, specially in the light of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.

Rival claims by Hindu and Muslim groups to the disputed site led to the demolition of the 16th century Babri Masjid by Hindu mobs Dec 6, 1992, triggering widespread communal violence that left thousands dead across the country.

The application was, however, yet to be received by the court registry where the petitioners plan to file it on Tuesday.
