SCLC hearing in Atlanta delayed until June 28
ATLANTA — A hearing in Atlanta to determine who controls the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is on hold for two weeks.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alford Dempsey is turning to other cases and will resume the SCLC hearing June 28.
Dueling SCLC factions split last fall over allegations of financial mismanagement by the embattled chairman and treasurer, who have refused to step aside pending federal and local investigations. Divided allegiances have created the perception of two SCLCs, conducting the organization’s business independently of one another.
The hearing has effectively turned into a bench trial, with dozens of exhibits and several witnesses presented since June 2.
The civil rights group was co-founded in 1957 by Martin Luther King Jr.
