British soldier jailed for refusing Afghan tour
LONDON — A British soldier who refused to serve in Afghanistan and spoke out against the war has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
Lance Cpl. Joe Glenton failed to report to a barracks in 2007 before a second tour of duty in Afghanistan. He had served in the country in 2006 with the Royal Logistic Corps.
Glenton was championed by Britain’s anti-war movement and attended a protest march last year.
He handed himself in to military authorities in June and pleaded guilty to being absent without leave. Glenton’s lawyer, Nick Wrack, said the soldier was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
He was sentenced to jail and demoted to private Friday by a military court in Colchester, southern England.

The war in Afghanistan is illegal therefore it’s perfectly acceptable that a soldier refuses to conform with ignoble army legislation. I invite the community in general to press the new parliament regarding this issue. Elton Uliana |
