Princess Caroline to testify at husband’s trial
HILDESHEIM, Germany — Princess Caroline of Monaco is planning to testify in the German trial of her husband Prince Ernst August of Hannover who is charged with assaulting a hotel owner in Kenya.
The prince, a distant relative of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and great-grandson of the last German emperor, Wilhelm II, is being retried after being convicted in 2004 of causing serious bodily harm and fined €445,000 ($645,000).
Ernst August does not deny the assault but is seeking to have the charge and sentence reduced.
The hotel owner says the prince beat him while wearing a metal ring and sent him to the hospital. Ernst August says he only slapped the hotelier.
Caroline is expected to corroborate her husband’s story when she takes the stand Wednesday.
