Jury deliberates in Seattle Jewish center shooting

SEATTLE — The second trial of a man who stormed into a Jewish center in Seattle three years ago and shot six women, killing one, is in the hands of a jury.

The King County Superior Court jury received the case Thursday afternoon following closing arguments.

Naveed Haq stormed the Seattle Jewish Federation in July 2006, opening fire as he ranted against Israel and the Iraq war. His attorneys acknowledge he did it, but say he was insane at the time and should be committed to a mental hospital for the rest of his life.

Prosecutors told the jury that although he is mentally ill, Haq knew what he was doing when he planned and carried out the attack. They want him convicted of murder and sent to prison.

Haq’s first trial ended with jurors deadlocked over the question of his sanity.
