Kerala court issues warrant for arrested LeT activist

KANNUR - A court in Kannur Thursday issued a warrant for Lashkar-e-Taiba terror outfit’s south India chief T. Nazeer, who has been arrested in Meghalaya, to be presented before the court Dec 7.
The Kannur Judicial First Class Magistrate 2 vourt issued the warrant after the police approached it for Nazeer’s custody for interrogation in two cases registered in 2002 and 2006.
Nazeer and his relative Shafas were Wednesday arrested in Meghalaya by the Border Security Force (BSF) near the border with Bangladesh. They were Thursday sent to a day’s custody in a jail in Shillong.
Nazeer is alleged to be involved in the 2005 terror attack on the Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Science in which a retired Indian Institute of Technology professor M.C. Puri was killed.
Inspector General of Police Tomin J. Thachenkeri, who is in charge of the Northern Range in the state, told reporters that the Bangalore police are expected to take custody of Nazeer.
“A team of police officials will leave for Bangalore. We are planning to have a joint interrogation with the Bangalore police of the accused,” said Thachenkeri.
According to the official, there are four cases against Nazeer in Kerala, including of attempt to murder former chief minister E.K. Nayanar, another murder case and two charges of burning buses.
The police say that just ahead of the Bangalore blast, Nazeer was in the state.
