Couple charged in Dugard kidnap appear in court

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A brief hearing for a California couple charged with kidnapping and raping Jaycee Lee Dugard has given two others with personal stakes in the case their first glimpses of the defendants in court.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido appeared in El Dorado County Superior Court on Thursday for a pretrial hearing and were ordered to return Dec. 11.

The hearing was attended by the woman Phillip Garrido was convicted of raping and kidnapping in 1976, as well as a Southern California man who says he’s Dugard’s biological father. Both say they want to support Dugard and make sure Garrido is convicted.

Neither Dugard nor any members of her immediate family went to the hearing.
