China sentences 6 more to death for Xinjiang riot

BEIJING — China has sentenced six more people to death for committing murder during deadly riots in the western Xinjiang region in July.

Nearly 200 people were killed Urumqi in July, when China’s worst riots in decades broke out, and saw Muslim Uighurs attack members of China’s dominant Han ethnic group.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday that six new defendants were sentenced to death and three other people were given life sentences by the Urumqi Intermediate People’s Court.

The report did not say if they were Uighurs. On Monday, six Uighur defendants were sentenced to death by the same court.
