Ex-friend testifies against SAfrica’s ex-top cop

JOHANNESBURG — A convicted drug dealer says he paid hefty bribes to South Africa’s ex-top cop in testimony at an explosive corruption trial.

Estranged friend Glen Agliotti told the Johannesburg High Court Tuesday that he paid Jackie Selebi 1 million rands ($132,170) in bribes.

In exchange, Agliotti says Selebi kept him informed of the investigation into Agliotti’s activities, the South African Press Association reported.

Selebi has pleaded not guilty to charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

He claims he is the victim of a conspiracy by the prosecuting authority to hide corruption by its top bosses.

The former Interpol president went on a leave of absence when he was charged in February 2007. Selebi’s contract was not renewed in July.
