NEW DELHI - Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Thursday said that she will get in touch with the ministry of home affairs (MHA) to enquire into the police action against a gang rape victim in Uttar Pradesh.
The 17-year-old victim had accused Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Purshottam Naresh Dwivedi and his henchmen of not only subjecting her to gang rape but also using his influence to falsely implicate her in a case of theft.
Dwivedi surrendered before an Uttar Pradesh court, top officials said Thursday. The incident happened in Banda, 180 km from Lucknow, last month.
“I will get in touch with the MHA so that there is an enquiry into why the police arrested the victim. The MHA will take action against the police,” Tirath said.
“Strong action must be taken against the legislator. But since I will get in touch with the home affairs ministry, I will not write to the Uttar Pradesh chief minister (Mayawati). I am sure the girl will get justice,” she added.
