Pakistan’s Chief Justice meets Indian counterpart

HYDERABAD - Chief Justice of Pakistan Ifthikar Muhammad Chaudhry Saturday met his Indian counterpart S.H. Kapadia.

The meeting, described as a courtesy call, lasted for 35 minutes. The two chief justices are here to attend the 17th Commonwealth Law Conference that will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday.

Chief Justice Chaudhry, who is staying at a hotel, reached the Lake View Guest House to meet Justice Kapadia. The two chief justices are believed to have exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.

The Pakistani chief justice, who arrived here Friday night, attended a meeting of chief justices as part of the conference at Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) Saturday morning.

Justice Chaudhry will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session of the Commonwealth Law Conference, the theme of which is “Emerging economies and rule of law”.

Chief Justice Kapadia will deliver the thematic address at the opening session.

Over 800 delegates including chief justices, legal experts, judges, lawyers and other legal practitioners are attending the five-day conference which is being held in India after 40 years.

The impact of globalisation on socio-economic rights, human rights and rule of law, free and fair elections and judicial independence and accountability are among the issues to be discussed during the biennial conference.
