NEW DELHI - The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the Delhi Police commissioner to initiate departmental inquiry against local police officers if any outlet was found selling tobacco products illegally close to a school or college.

Directing police to effectively enforce the Tobacco Products Control Act, the division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna suggested the setting up of a special squad for the purpose.

The court’s order came after petitioner NGO World Lung Foundation informed the bench that the law had not been implemented in true spirit.

The petitioner said a survey conducted recently showed that selling of tobacco products was rampant near 323 city schools and 10 Delhi University colleges.
