G.R.Sofi to head Kashmir Information Commission (Second Lead, superseding earlier story)

JAMMU - G.R.Sofi, a serving income tax officer, was Thursday appointed the Chief Information Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir. He will head the first information commission in the state.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti met in the afternoon and selected Sofi to head the transparency law panel.

An official release issued late Thursday evening said: “In a consensus decision, the committee chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recommended the name of G.R.Sofi for the coveted post of state Chief Information Commissioner for Jammu and Kashmir.”

A senior officer of Indian Revenue Service 1977 batch, Sofi is at present chief commissioner, Income Tax, Amritsar region, which includes Jammu and Kashmir.

“The committee will meet again before the start of assembly session to finalise the names of two state information commissioners,” the release added.
