Brazilian man sentenced for Vermont border assault

BURLINGTON, Vt. — A Brazilian man is going to prison for over 3 years for assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the Vermont-Quebec border.

Vermont’s U.S. Attorney’s office says 34-year-old Alexsandre Da Silva was convicted of charges stemming from the July 2008 incident that prompted the Border Patrol agent to fire his weapon twice. No one was hit.

Da Silva was sentenced to 41 months in prison. He ws one of two Brazilians sentenced Thursday in federal court in Brattleboro stemming from the same incident.

The other person sentenced, 35-year-old Evaldo Ferreira-Pinto, was sentenced to time served for illegal entry into the United States after having been deported.

Officials say the agent found the two men and a woman trying to sneak into the United States.
