Is he a good Samaritan or a crook? Court asks police

NEW DELHI - The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked police to

clarify if a man who helped a victim of a roadside brawl was a criminal as alleged by police or a good Samaritan.

Taking suo moto cognisance of a report in the Mail Today of Aug 3, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar said: Just clarify if the person is a history sheeter as per your record or not and file a status report.

The court appointed advocate Aparna Bhatt as amicus curiae in the case.

Sonu, a metal merchant from Faridabad, was allegedly beaten up by police after he took a man injured in the brawl to a hospital near the Welcome Metro Station in northeast Delhi.

Sonus mother alleged she had to pay Rs.5,000 in bribe to force the police to release him.

My son is unnecessarily being framed by police. He has been slapped with as many as nine cases in which he was never involved, the mother told the bench.

Delhi Police told the court that Sonu was involved in dacoity, robbery and extortion. Hearing this, the court asked police counsel Meera Bhatia to file a detailed status report by the next date of hearing.
